CHUCK BEATTIE

Long time jazz aficionado and blues historian, Chuck currently fronts a five-piece Chicago-Style Blues band and is a member of the North Carolina Jazz Ensemble, a jazz big band based in Durham, North Carolina.

Blues By Design is the dream of  Dr. Charles M. (Chuck) Beattie II of Weaverville, near Asheville, North Carolina.  Beattie, whose experience in jazz and gospel was gained in diverse situations; from a full jazz ensemble to small combo work in jazz R&B and gospel, has proudly shared the stage with The Kelly Brothers, Otis Clay, Nnenna Freelon, Melva Houston, Stanley Baird, Henry Butler, Will McFarlane (Bonnie Raitt), Armand Lenchek (Nappy Brown, Skeeter Brandon, Deborah Coleman), Aaron Mills (Cameo), Gospel Tones of Raleigh, John Cephas and Phil Wiggins, among many others.

Among his musical friends and mentors he counts Herman Burney, Bucky Pizerelli, Taj Mahal, Tommy Tedesco, Big Bill Morganfield, Mary Flower, Ann Rabson, Gaye Adegbalola, Andra Faye, Pat Donohue, Nappy Brown, Steady Rolling Bob Margolin, Debra Coleman, Wally Coleman "Whitt" Williams and the legendary Bo Diddley.

Music and Art play an important part in Chuck's life.  A multi-instrumentalist, he plays guitar, bass, harmonica, drums, trumpet and keyboards.  “I have always loved music and my family supported my musical endeavours.”  Beattie’s mother plays piano, and his father (deceased) had a beautiful tenor voice.

Chuck's first CD, Chuck Beattie and Blues By Design - A Sample of the Blues, has been very well received with over 1000 copies being sold and distributed to fellow artists, agents, venues and fans. "Our music has been featured in commercials, played on college radio stations in Florida and on webcasts, and has served as the sound track for the video Growing Golden Seal, produced by The North Carolina Ginseng and Golden Seal Company and has received airplay on radio stations in North Carolina, Florida, England, Kenya and Belgium."

His second release, Chuck Beattie and Blues By Design - Live at the Blue Ridge Corn Maze, was recorded August 31, 2002 at the Cornstock Amphitheatre during the Blue Ridge Festival and National Slide Guitar Competition - Mackey's Farm Penrose, North Carolina. This project has already sold over 500 copies at shows and through the internet.  Both CD's are available online at CD Baby.com.
